cancer.ed - the virtual learning environment for the Institute of Cancer Research

Welcome to the MSc in Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research. This is the only Post-Graduate Educational course in the UK specifically directed to the needs of medically qualified doctors specialising in oncology.

We believe that this gives a unique opportunity for students to learn by interacting as equals with their teachers and peers.

Students will leave the MSc with a detailed knowledge of the basic sciences underpinning the practice of oncology, practical applications of research methods, together with site specific clinical practice and an appreciation of the professional and educational values within Medical and Clinical Oncology.

Core values shared by the discipline include:

  • Active improvement of our treatments through the enhancement of the science relating to the causes and treatment of cancer.

  • Engagement with clinical trials and development of technologies for the benefit of patients

  • The importance of empathy and compassion towards patients and colleagues in the practice of oncology

  • The importance of good communication skills and understanding cancer in context

  • Collaboration to develop and enhance cancer services for the benefit of patients

(2010 Clinical Oncology Curriculum)

The MSc course emphasises interactive learning, developing clinical judgement and critical approaches to evidence.

Students are expected to:

    • attend all sessions (course regulations)
    • respect their peers and teachers by being punctual and courteous
    • submit written work in the students own words and correctly referenced (plagiarism guidance)

All students are encouraged to pursue the MSc dissertation which provides mentored support from an ICR tutor, a local supervisor and peer support in order to complete an original dissertation suitable for presentation and possible peer reviewed publication.
